第36回 The silent letters in English
The silent letters in English
Have you ever looked at a word in English and wondered why there are letters that are not used when we pronounce the word? Words for example like “debt” or “knight” both have letters that aren’t said out loud. Well, there are quite a few reasons why this is. Basically, this is a result of English being such a fast-evolving language, as well as English vocabulary coming from many linguistic sources: Latin, Old French, Anglo-Saxon (a.k.a. Old English), Norse etc. When we look for the origin of words in English, we can often trace them back to other languages. Over the years, the sound of English words changed but some of the old spelling remained the same. For me, it is an interesting look into the past to find out which language some words originally came from. Try it yourself sometime!
