Recently in Japan there has been a lot of talk about the G7 summit. I’d like to tell you some basic things about what the G7 summit actually is. First of all “G7” stands for “Group of Seven”. That is because it is made up of 7 countries, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Canada, along with the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission. Until 2014 it was called the G8 but changed to G7 when Russia was suspended from the group. Now, what they actually do is, at the summit meeting, the heads of government discuss global challenges, and try to make leadership decisions. Then, the results of the meeting are summarized in the form of a declaration. Some people think that these meetings are a waste of time and money and that nothing is really achieved. Others think that these meetings are very valuable for world leaders to join together in addressing global challenges. What do you think about the G7 summit? Tell me your opinion the next time we have a chance to chat!
