Laughter can be the Best Medicine
Life isn’t always easy. Life can sometimes be very difficult and stressful.
As students, you have many responsibilities. There are tests, homework, more tests, more homework. There are times when you feel like it is just too much right?
Today, I want to talk to you about something that can help you reduce your stress and make you feel better. It’s laughter.
Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and hard times. It works fast and you can depend on it to bring your mind and body back into balance. Having a laugh makes you feel lighter, gives you hope and connects you to people around you. Laughter has the power to heal and is very important for supporting both physical and mental health.
• Laughter relaxes your body. A good laugh can make you feel less tense and reduce stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
• Laughter makes your body stronger. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies.
• Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins give us a general sense of happiness.
• Laughter protects your heart. Laughter increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other heart problems.
Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh stays with you even after the laughter is over. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic mind even when you are in a difficult situation, feel disappointed or sad.
However, more than just a relief from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh–or even just a smile–can make you feel better. And, laughter really is contagious—just hearing laughter lets you smile and join in the fun.
So, remember, laughter brings people together during hard times. It’s good for your mind and your body and is easy to do! Start with a smile and try to find something to laugh about everyday. I promise it will make you feel better!
