第4回 Ride Safely
Many of you ride your bikes to school. Many of you ride your bikes after school and on your day off too. A bicycle is a convenient way to travel around but please remember to ride safely.
Recently in the news there was a story about a young boy who was riding too fast and crashed into an old woman. The old woman was hurt very badly and has been in the hospital for a long time.
The boy’s mother was ordered by the court to pay a very, very large amount of money. This was money she didn’t have. The court decided that the mother had not taught her son to ride safely and she should be responsible for the accident because the boy was still a child. This is a sad story because two families were hurt very badly because a boy was riding his bike too fast and not thinking about other people.
You might think this kind of story will never happen to you. I hope it doesn’t. I hope that you ride your bike with care and you consider the people around you. But, accidents sometimes happen. You could seriously hurt yourself or another person and in an extreme case, your family might have to pay a lot of money.
Do not use your phone when you are riding your bike. If you have to use your phone, just STOP riding and use it. In Japan you must wear a helmet if you are younger than 13 years old. Please don’t forget that. A helmet could save your life if you get into a bike accident. It’s probably a good idea to wear a helmet anytime you are riding on a busy road even if you are older than 13. Around your neighborhood or when you are in a local area, there is still the possibility of an accident happening. When you ride a bike, listening to headphones is dangerous for you and for the people around you. You need to use your eyes and your ears when riding a bike to avoid trouble. At night, please always use a light on your bike. There are many small roads in Japan and sometimes cars, motorcycles and other bicycles ride too fast down these small streets. If people can’t see your light, there is a strong possibility they could crash into you!!
When you ride a bike, please use common sense to protect yourself and the people around you.
