第3回 Reading to Improve your English
Reading to Improve your English
Students often ask me “What is a good way to improve my English”. Today, I’d like to talk about that. I think one of the best ways for you to improve your English ability is by reading books in English. This is something that you can do very easily. At first, it might seem a little difficult but, I’m sure you can do it if you try. Here is some advice about reading in English.
1. Read at your correct level.
Reading something that is too easy can be boring. Reading something too high a level can be frustrating. Even reading children’s books in English is a great place to begin.
2. Write down new vocabulary.
If you find a word that you do not know, write it down in a notebook. Later on you can look up the definitions. Mark them in the book that you are reading, so that you can reread the section with the understanding of the word.
3. Read a little everyday.
The more you read, the more new words you will learn, and the more you will enjoy reading. Try 15 to 20 minutes per day of reading. Everyday reading is much better than just a few times a week. Read as much as you can, when you can.
4. Read about what you like.
If you are interested in what you are reading, you are more likely to continue reading. You can read magazines, newspapers or even instruction manuals for new gadgets you have bought. You can even try a poem book or a comic book. Any material is okay, as long as you are reading at your level and you are interested in what you are reading. If the reading is boring to you, reading will not be fun.
5. Read out loud.
When you read out loud by yourself, you can hear your own words and can understand that you may be saying them incorrectly. Reading to someone else, like someone in your family or a friend or a teacher is a good way to get feedback from them.
